Proud to Sport

Lotte van den Hanenberg

This documentary focuses on finding resilience through sport. You get to meet Ed van Betuw and Laura van Beckhoven. Ed is homosexual, and very passionate about tennis. In the course of his life, he used tennis as a means for homo-emancipation in the Netherlands, including setting up a pink tennis association. Laura is transgender, her goal is to become the fastest speed surfing woman in the world. Her transgender identity caused for a lot of resistance, but she has found strength in her sport and actively contributes to make sport a safer space for gender diverse athletes.

Director statement

With this film, I want to create awareness for the position of lgbtq+ athletes in sport. Unfortunately, some lgbtq+ athletes still experience discrimination in their sport environment. In this film, Ed and Laura both share their personal experiences in adversity and resilience building. I hope to inspire people who experience the same, or to show a new perspective to people who might be unaware of the (possible) minority position of lgbtq+ people in sport.
