Macho Performance ‘Strength in Vulnerability’ follows a group of men as they engage with rap music as a form of emotional expression. Through writing and performing, these men use rap to navigate their mental health, finding strength in vulnerability.

The film highlights the paradox of rap performance, where expressing raw emotion requires the outward display of toughness, particularly on stage. Shot primarily at the youth creative center in Lelystad, where rap seems to be a predominantly male outlet, the film delves into the gender dynamics of rap culture and how it serves as a unique mode of expression for male-identifying individuals.

Through their experiences, the film explores the intersection of gender performance and mental well-being, offering a glimpse into the complex ways men communicate through rap.

Bio

Anne Laure Kloosterman

Anne Laure Kloosterman (1996) is a visual anthropologist based in the Netherlands, whose work explores themes of religion, mental health, creativity, and gender. While interning as a psychologist, she encountered limited opportunities for creatively addressing mental health issues. The restrictive nature of diagnosis and the imbalanced power dynamics with her clients prompted her to adopt a collaborative and imaginative approach. This experience led her to enrol in the Master’s program ‘Visual Ethnography’ at Leiden University. Through co-creation and audio-visual media, Anne Laure seeks to capture diverse perspectives, often incorporating her passions for painting, drawing, and writing into her projects.
