In my hands, In your hands

By

Thalia Pinidis

In my hands, In your hands follows the lives of two women herbalists as they navigate their philosophy built upon intergenerational knowledge and seek their own paths to freedom. Through the landscapes of the Greek island Corfu, that house their ancient practices, we meet Eleni and Dimitra, two individuals engaging with the traditions of herbalism. Through several herbal activities and intimate interviews, the documentary paints a vivid picture of the women’s definition of ‘being close to nature’. As Eleni and Dimitra forge connections with the plants that have sustained families for generations, they also unearth the power within themselves to feel independent.

In a world where the pace of life accelerates and ancient knowledge risks fading into obscurity, In my hands, In your hands is an exploration of identity, freedom, and the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature.

Director statement

My journey as a filmmaker has been guided by a commitment to infuse feminist ideals into my work. I found myself drawn to stories that resonate with the lived experiences of the women in Corfu, narratives that explore the intriguing layers of their lives, struggles, and triumphs.

A feminist approach in film, to me, means not only a pursuit of gender equality but also an exploration of the multifaceted human experience. It entails a conscious effort to dismantle stereotypes, disrupt the male gaze, and amplify authentic voices. By delving into the untold stories of the women that participated in this project, I aspire to foster empathy and understanding among audiences. I believe that when we see the world through different perspectives, we open ourselves to a richer, more nuanced understanding of making sense of this world.
