My research and film explore the experiences of several long-term residents of the Outer Banks of North Carolina as they navigate change associated with overdevelopment and gentrification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a growing tourism and investment locale, Outer Banks residents are faced with major changes to their built and natural landscape, social systems, livelihoods, and the perceived character of their home. For many, the rising cost of living has made it so unaffordable that they are forced to physically relocate. For those who can manage to stay, their surroundings are fundamentally altered as small businesses are replaced by large corporations and feelings of tight-knit community are threatened by ever-growing populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rising costs and commercialization associated with gentrification are not just altering the physical landscape, but also the cultural and emotional connections residents have to their home. That being said, long-term residents remain steadfast and resilient despite both development and displacement pressures. Through various resilience and resistance practices, Outer Banks inhabitants maintain a strong love of place.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Hello! My name is Muriel Kruize. I was born in Alexandria, Virginia and have spent most of my upbringing between there and Burkina Faso, Rwanda, and Zambia. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences from Maastricht University and soon a Master of Science in Visual Ethnography from Leiden University. My parents, Amy and Eric, have instilled in me a sense of justice, openness, and kindness that I try to carry with me in all aspects of my personal and professional life.
