The film captures the Noongar community’s efforts to heal both the land and their cultural heritage.

Through a decolonizing lens, the film documents the everyday practices of the Noongar Land Enterprise (NLE) group as they lead ecological restoration projects that transcend conventional Western environmental approaches. These efforts are not merely about planting trees but represent a broader journey of cultural resurgence, healing the scars left by colonisation, and reconnecting with traditions almost lost to history.

The film employs yarning—a traditional Aboriginal narrative practice—and visual ethnography to convey the spiritual and emotional dimensions of Healing Country. It highlights the voices of community leaders, such as Oral McGuire, who articulate the necessity of integrating Indigenous knowledge with modern ecological practices. The film also reflects on the broader implications of these practices in contemporary Australia, especially in light of the recent referendum on Indigenous recognition. Ultimately, “Healing Country” is not just a call to restore the land but a call to restore the spirit and identity of the Noongar people. The film invites viewers to witness the profound relationship between people and Country, urging respect for the indefinable connections that sustain both ecological and cultural resilience.

Bio

From a young age, I’ve felt a deep connection to the Earth, driven by the belief that our planet is a fragile, interconnected ecosystem that needs our protection. This conviction led me to study political science with a focus on climate justice at Leiden University, where I became increasingly aware of the unsustainable and exploitative nature of our current Western approach to environmental management. Later, I pursued a master’s in anthropology because I believe true change must come from the people. My time in Australia profoundly challenged my perspectives, pushing me to reconsider how we interact with the environment. Immersing myself in a new culture deepened my understanding of sustainability and highlighted the importance of integrating diverse approaches to environmental care. I returned with the realization that true stewardship requires more than theoretical solutions—it demands humility, respect, and a holistic approach that honors the interconnectedness of all life.

This ethnographic film explores the deep connection between the Noongar people and their ancestral lands on Noongar Boodja, at Boola Boornap, a native tree nursery in Western Australia.
