Filmed during the droughts of 2024, the film Konik [water] discusses the (drinking)water system and supply of Epinun village, a village on Parem island, Chuuk, in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through a combination of observational and participatory cinema the viewer gets a holistic overview of the different water sources including rainwater, coconut water, filtered water and well water, combined with the island’s core subsistence practices farming and fishing which are deeply interconnected with the water sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social structure in the village is translated into the film through role division by which Norsiana, the mother of the village, narrates the film, DeeJay, one of the men, shows the viewer around, the other adults are going about their daily work and the kids are seen playing around and helping with the tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the social structure in the village, being guided along the different water sources with throughout the film some hints of everyday island life, the impact of the droughts is discussed: namely the loss of available drinking water and water for household tasks alongside food shortages from failed crops.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Hi, I’m Floor! I’m 22 and I am from the Netherlands. Last schoolyear I did the masters Visual Ethnography at Leiden university which gave me the wonderful opportunity to create this film, which I hope you enjoy watching :).
